How to use Tesco Clubcard vouchers before August 2023 expiry (2024)

Savvy shoppers will already know about supermarket loyalty cards, including the Tesco Clubcard.

To earn points, simply swipe your card every time you pop into Tesco for a meal deal, your regular food shopping, or top up your car’s fuel – you can also earn by shopping online, using Tesco Bank and Tesco Mobile.

Once your points add up, they’re turned into money-saving vouchers that can be used for food shopping or to give you a code to spend with Tesco’s reward partners.

Crucially, the vouchers don’t stay valid forever. You can’t save them indefinitely. They will eventually expire – and a stark warning was issued to shoppers earlier this month as over £11.5 million in savings were set to be wasted.

So, when do you need to use them by? And what exactly can you splash your Clubcard vouchers on?

Here’s all you need to know.

When do Tesco Clubcard vouchers expire?

Tesco Clubcard vouchers do expire, but first, you collect them as points.

You collect points every time you shop: one point per £1 spent, with one point per every two litres of fuel bought – a change which came in this summer.

These points are totted up during ‘collection periods’, which you can view on your Clubcard account.

Every few months, the points you have collected are totted up and you’re given a statement of what you’ve earned – which turns points into Clubcard vouchers with a monetary value.

If you’ve earned 150 points, for example, you’ll be able to get a £1.50 voucher. Any points that aren’t added to vouchers are then rolled over to your next statement.

Statements are released around February, May, August and November each year.

Once you’ve got your vouchers, though, there is an expiry date – exactly two years after they’ve been issued.

This is why vouchers issued in August 2021 will expire in August 2023.

And once you’ve exchanged a voucher for a reward partner code, allowing you to spend it with one of Clubcard’s reward partners (see below), the code usually expires after six months.

The amount of value you get from these codes changed on June 14 (decreasing from three to two times the amount listed on the voucher), so any codes you’ve ordered before that date will expire after 12 months, instead of six months.

If in doubt, the expiration date should be clearly listed on your voucher or code, so take note.

Where can you spend Tesco Clubcard vouchers?

There are a fair few places you can spend these vouchers, so check out the full list of reward partners on Tesco Clubcard’s website.

However, here are a few highlights:

Food shopping

Grocery shopping certainly feels pricier these days – so it’s useful to know you can spend Clubcard vouchers on it.

You’ll get the listed value of the voucher. So, if you’ve earned 500 points and have a £5 voucher, you’ll get £5 off.

You can redeem the vouchers either in-store or by ticking the relevant box at the online checkout.

Fuel

Similarly, you can spend your Clubcard vouchers on fuel for your car or vehicle.

They’re valid at Tesco filling stations, and Esso stations with a Tesco Express– and are worth the number listed on the voucher.

So, again, if you have a £5 voucher, that’ll get you £5 off the cost of your fuel.£10 voucher will get you £10 off.

Theme park trips

A number of UK theme parks are Tesco reward partners – so you can put your vouchers towards a fun family day out.

Options include: Alton Towers Resort, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Chessington World of Adventures Resort, Drayton Manor, Legoland Windsor and Thorpe Park.

With these reward partners, every 50p is worth £1 to spend, so it’s wise to order these reward codes before this date to get the maximum value.

UK experiences and days out

Fancy a trip to see wildlife? A castle? An aquarium? There are loads of days out you could pay for with Clubcard.

English Heritage memberships and entrance fees are among your options, as are some Blue Reef Aquariums, Colchester Zoo, Warwick Castle, Port Lympne Wildlife Park, Eden Project and The London Bridge Experience.

As with theme park trips, a 50p voucher is worth £1 across these partners – a slight decrease after the change came into effect in June 2023 (decreasing from £1.50 per 50p voucher).

Eating out at restaurants and pubs

Pizza Express, Hungry Horse pubs, Cafe Rouge, Prezzo, Ask Italian and Zizzi are some of the many restaurants partnered with Clubcard.

You can spend as little as 50p in vouchers, which will be worth £1 off your meal.

Travel, such as Virgin flights, hotels and Railcards

Starting from just £5 in Clubcard vouchers, get twice the value to spend at Hotels.com, then book your next trip in a few clicks.

If you’re dreaming of a holiday, you could commit your Clubcard vouchers to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, which allows you to save up Virgin Points to pay for reward flights.

£1.50 in vouchers equates to 300 Virgin Rewards points, and you can start upgrading your flights from around 7,000 points (correct at time of writing).

You can also spend Virgin Reward points on other things, like a cup of coffee from Costa or a Greggs sausage roll.

Essentials, such as phones and car insurance

Feel like saving on everyday purchases, such as your phone, car insurance or household items?

You can spend your Clubcard vouchers with Tesco Mobile, with vouchers worth the amount listed. So, a 50p voucher will get you 50p off a new phone or even your monthly contract.

Essentially, your food shopping and fuel purchases could pay for your phone if you keep it in the Tesco family.

Homeware shop Denby are also reward partners, allowing you to turn every 50p in vouchers into £1 to spend on essentials for around the home.

Lifestyle, such as gym memberships or magazines

Last but not least: you can also use Clubcard vouchers to subsidise lifestyle purchases.

Gym membership Hussle is a reward partner, as are Fitbit, SpaSeekers, various magazine and newspaper subscriptions, and even jewellery shops such as Goldsmiths.
