Fitness expert reveals the summer drinks that are bad for your health (2024)

Fitness experts have revealed the seven popular summer drinks that you may not realize are bad for your health - from smoothies to lemonade.

As temperatures rise, it's natural to crave an ice cold beverage - but unfortunately, a lot of refreshing liquids are packed to the brim with harmful preservatives and detrimental sugars.

Thankfully, UK-based personal trainer Donna Callander teamed up with the experts atLive Football Tickets to create a list of the drinks that are the worst for you - so you can be sure to consume them in moderation.

'Your body is mainly made up of water, so staying hydrated is essential, especially with the extra sweating that happens in the summer,' Donna told the publication.

'While everything is fine in moderation or as an occasional treat, it's important to be mindful of the hidden calories, sugars, and salts in what you consume.'

First up on their list of beverages to avoid were energy drinks, as the outlet explained that while they could give you a 'quick buzz,' they can ultimately 'lead to dehydration' (stock image)

First up on their list of beverages to avoid were energy drinks, as the outlet explained that while they could give you a 'quick buzz,' they can ultimately 'lead to dehydration and leave you dizzy and thirstier on a scorching day.'

'Their sweet taste makes it easy to overconsume, causing issues like abnormal heart rhythms, seizures, and mood swings,' added Live Football Tickets.

Next up were sweet co*cktails like margaritas anddaiquiris.

'Theycan be deceptively refreshing but are often sugar-laden,' the site said.

Experts at Live Football Tickets pointed out that just one margarita can account for more than 70 per cent of your 'daily sugar intake.'

'Remember, every alcoholic drink you consume can cause your body to lose up to four times as much liquid,' the publication continued.

'Make a habit of drinking a glass of water for every co*cktail or between alcoholic drinks - which not only helps moderate your intake but also keeps you hydrated this summer.'

Another drink that they said is bad for your health is bubble tea - which is filled with 'artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.'

The experts pointed out that the beverage 'drives calorie count up' and is 'low in nutritional value.'

'The tapioca pearls, while fun to chew, can also cause gastrointestinal issues like bloating, gas, and constipation,' the site warned.

Live Football Tickets also advised against drinking too much lemonade - despite the drink being a favorite for many in the summer.

'This blend of sugar and acidity not only causes unwelcome spikes in blood sugar levels, but can also be tough on your teeth, providing a breeding ground for bacteria that erodes tooth enamel and leads to cavities,' it shared.

'Since copious amounts of sugar are often needed to balance out the acidity of the lemons, lemonade ends up being more of a sugar-sweetened treat than a health boost.'

In addition, the outlet described frozen coffees andfrappuccinos as 'sneaky sugar bombs' that are 'loaded with whipped cream, syrups, and full-fat milk.'

'Consuming too many of these can contribute to weight gain and associated health problems like obesity and type 2 diabetes,' it added.

Also on the list were smoothies, which, despite their 'healthful appearance,' are full of sugars that are 'quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.'

Last but not least on the list was soda, as the experts pointed out that soft drinks tend to 'dehydrate you' thanks to their 'high sugar and caffeine content' (stock image)

'While smoothies may include a variety of fruits, vegetables, and nutrient-rich ingredients, overconsumption can sabotage your intended health goals,' Live Football Tickets wrote.

'Unlike whole fruit, which is high in fiber and slower to digest, blending fruit breaks down its cell walls and releases natural sugars as free sugars that are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels.'

Last but not least on the list was soda, as the experts pointed out that soft drinks tend to 'dehydrate you' thanks to their 'high sugar and caffeine content.'

'Excess sugar forces your kidneys to work harder to process it, leading to increased urination and subsequent fluid loss,' added the site.
